Welcome to Samaggi Samagom
Samaggi, a beautiful Thai word that could be translated as cohesion, unity and togetherness, hence, “Samaggi Samagom.” Established by H.M. King Rama VI (Vajiravudh), in the year 1901 during his educational years in the United Kingdom.
King Vajiravudh’s was educated in the United Kingdom in 1893 to 1901 at Christ Church College of Oxford University. Thereafter his graduation, ‘Samaggi Samagom’ was established with an aim to reinforce harmonious relationships of the growing number of Thai students in the United Kingdom by providing activities including sports, debating and musical events.
When King Vajiravudh returned to Thailand to succeed the throne, he entered ‘Samaggi Samagom’ into the Royal Patronage, and assigned the elegant and prestigious symbol as is known today. Moreover, Samaggi Samagom is arguably the most deep-rooted and prestigious committee for Thais; as there are no other committee established by the King.
Today, after 107 years of commemoration, Samaggi Samagom still operates as a student-run committee. It remains a representation of an ‘umbrella’ for all Thai Societies in the United Kingdom to make university life more enjoyable and eventful. The Royal Thai Embassy and the Anglo-Thai Society are a few of many stakeholders to help enforce the Committees’ objective founded by King Vajiravudh.
Furthermore, Samaggi Samagom is proud to have had the opportunity to nurture alumni that have played a significant role in Thai politics, economics and society. These role model includes Khun Anan Panyarachun, Rear Admiral ML Usni Pramoj, Prof. Dr. Chirayu Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, Prof. Yongyuth Yuthavong, Khun Abhisit Vejjajiva and many more. Samaggi Samagom hopes to continue to provide stepping stone for future graduates into the development of our great nation.
In the current 2007-2008 academic year, Samaggi Samagom has organized and hosted events such as ‘Mahateerarajao’ Day, celebrating the establishment of the committee, ‘the S factor,’ a singing competition and ‘dao mahalai’ competition.
However, Samaggi Samagom’s main events are aligned as follow:
